and direction
Land was purchased from the federal government for $1.25 per acre. This was part of the government’s land program, authorized in the “Act of April 24, 1820,” to encourage settlement of “western” lands.
Present day roads and highways, and the cemetery itself, have been included on the diagram below as current landmarks.
The entire tract on which McCord Cemetery sits today was originally owned by immigrant John Paden (Jun 10, 1767, Co. Antrim, Ireland – Feb 6, 1840, Montgomery Co. IL). John and his wife Isabella are buried at McCord Cemetery, along with six of their children. Isabella’s death on August 30, 1838, makes her one of the earliest burials at McCord Cemetery. Two other burials precede Isabella’s: Martha Rutledge, the 13-year-old daughter of Mark S. and Nancy (Bostick) Rutledge who died three years earlier in 1835 is the first burial; and Nancy Knight, the 13-year-old daughter of Joel and Martha (Bostick) Knight who died three weeks before Isabella on August 7, 1838. The burying ground was very meaningful and significant to the Paden family and its conveyance to the McCord Cemetery Association was to preserve the land as a burial ground forever.
